Frequently asked questions

What is a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?
A Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) is the minimum amount you must withdraw each year from certain tax-deferred retirement accounts after reaching the required age established by the IRS.
At what age do I have to start taking RMDs?
For most people, RMDs begin at age 73 under current federal law. This age may increase for younger generations based on future legislation.
Which retirement accounts require RMDs?
Las RMD generalmente aplican a:
  • IRAs Tradicionales
  • SEP IRAs
  • SIMPLE IRAs
  • 401(k) Tradicionales
  • 403(b)
  • Planes 457(b)
How is my RMD calculated?
Your RMD is calculated by dividing your retirement account balance as of December 31 of the previous year by a life expectancy factor published by the IRS.
What happens if I don't take my Required Minimum Distribution?
Failing to withdraw your full RMD may result in an IRS penalty. Under current law, the penalty is generally 25% of the amount not withdrawn, and it may be reduced if corrected promptly.
Can I withdraw more than my Required Minimum Distribution?
Yes. You may withdraw more than the required minimum, but the extra amount generally does not reduce next year's RMD requirement.
Do I have to pay taxes on my RMD?
Usually yes. Most RMDs from tax-deferred retirement accounts are taxed as ordinary income in the year you receive them.
Do Roth IRAs have Required Minimum Distributions?
No. Roth IRAs do not require RMDs during the original owner's lifetime. However, inherited Roth IRAs may be subject to distribution rules.
Can I delay my first Required Minimum Distribution?
Yes. Your first RMD may generally be delayed until April 1 of the year after you reach your required beginning age. However, delaying means you'll likely have to take two RMDs in the same year, which could increase your taxable income.
Do I have to take an RMD from each retirement account separately?
Can I continue working and delay my RMD?
Possibly. If you're still working and participating in your employer's retirement plan, you may be able to delay RMDs from that employer's plan if the plan allows it. This exception generally does not apply to Traditional IRAs.
What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows eligible individuals to donate directly from an IRA to a qualified charity. A QCD may satisfy all or part of your RMD while potentially reducing your taxable income.
How can I reduce the taxes on my RMD?
What happens to my RMD after I inherit a retirement account?
Inherited retirement accounts follow different IRS rules depending on your relationship to the original owner and when the account was inherited. Some beneficiaries must withdraw the account within 10 years, while others may qualify for different distribution schedules.
How can I prepare before RMDs begin?
Considera:
  • Estimar tus futuras RMD
